I can't call myself an X-Men fan. I've read a handful of X-Men books and know enough to get by, but I think the general angst that surrounds the team turned me off. Aw, the world you're sworn to protect hates you. Boo fucking hoo. You're superheroes. Suck it up and act like it.
Aside from that pointed opinion, I'll give anything a chance. Currently in my possession from Soss and a buddy that's more of a X-Fan than I, are Days of Future Past and the entire Joss Whedon/John Cassaday Astonishing run. Two stories that live in the realm of "if you call yourself a comic book fan, these are stories you should have read."
An issue into Days of Future Past and I'm fairly impressed. I'm a harsh 80s book critic. Usually that old ass art and color are a death sentence. So far, Days has risen above that.
I'll be sure to keep things posted as my X-investigation rolls on.
