Physical Challenge Indeed

The uncomfortable way Marc Summers used to get off on watching children doing "physical challenges" has been put on the back burner today as I've received some debilitating news: Geoff Johns is leaving Green Lantern.

Johns and I have been on the same journey for the last 10 years. He pitched Green Lantern: Rebirth in 2003. The first issue of that series, which relaunched the Green Lantern franchise came out in 2004. Before Green Lantern: Rebirth #1 my comic life had no direction. I was rudderless bouncing between different DC titles. Johns' Green Lantern gave me a place to drop anchor and call home.

After 10 years and over 100 issues including the storylines The Sinestro Corps War, Blackest Night, Brightest Day, War of the Green Lanterns and most recently The Third Army Johns has certainly earned going out on his own terms which is what he'll do. This coming May, the 64-page Green Lantern #20 will be his last issue wrapping up his epic Lantern saga.

His replacement hasn't been named yet, but those are mighty big shoes to fill. Johns has given me something as a 34 year old that made me feel like Star Wars did when I was 10. You don't get that kind of pure enjoyment too often.

So thank you, Geoff Johns for making myself and many other fanboys believe all will be well.
