The powers of the Jedi in the Original Trilogy are lacking. Technology and special effects just weren't where they are now between 1977 and 1983. In the Prequel Trilogy we've seen all that a Jedi is capable of and more. Its a shame no one gives a flying fuck about those Jedis. The Jedi EVERYONE cares about? Luke Skywalker.
Mark Hamill and the stuntmen did a great job in Return of the Jedi making him be as imposing and badass as he could be. The assault on Jabba's sail barge in Jedi is still my favorite scene in all of Star Wars lore. But its still something from 1983.
Now we have the chance with modern day technology and training to get someone in the boots of Luke Skywalker that can show us just how badass the greatest Jedi of all time is. Do we really want to see 61-year old Mark Hamill just be the quiet type like Alec Guiness was in Star Wars? I don't think so.
Episode VII is a chance to see Luke Skywalker in his prime. Don't be afraid. Recast it. Hire Ryan Gosling and be bold about it. Don't take the easy way out and make it 30 years after Jedi.
Those are some of my hopes and dreams for this new trilogy. Do I think its going to happen? Not a chance in hell. They'll take place 40 years after Jedi and they'll have a female lead. A guy can dream though right?
