Uncanny X-Men #1
Marvel...please stop renumbering titles! I've reviewed the relaunch of Uncanny X-Men three times in two years. Knock it off.
This book features the revolution/rescue team Cyclops has assembled in the wake of the birth of hundreds of new mutants throughout the world. However all is not as it seems with this group of X-Men. Emma Frost, Magneto and Cyclops' mutant powers are all functioning improperly making them more dangerous then before. A mysterious stranger goes to the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier to warn Maria Hill.
I hate Scott Summers in his new found role as chief bad guy in the Marvel universe. It feels like a cheap professional wrestling bit. I can't imagine a character like Batman or the Flash running around as a bad guy for the better part of a year with no end in sight.
Chris Bachalo is great on this book. He has a tendency to get too abstract but he is restrained in Uncanny X-Men and it works out well.
Batman #17
I'd have to agree with Gint's assessment of this book. It was very underwhelming not only as a stand alone issue but the entire Death of the Family arc. That said there was still a lot I did like about this arc.
I was okay with how much Snyder's Joker talked. That's what that character does. Almost every incarnation in every form of media highlights this. Hell, even Health Ledger's “realistic” take on The Clown Prince was a Chatty Kathy.
I wish Snyder was more clear that things will never be the same with the Bat Family. “Death” is too extreme of a term to throw around just because no one is returning Bruce's calls.
Greg Capullo knocked it out of the park again. I'm so happy that he is finally getting the acknowledgment for how great his work is.
Something that stood out to me was the flashback scene where Bruce visits the Joker in Arkham. What I gathered is that in the New 52 no one actually knows who the Joker is. Did I miss something? Did anyone cover this prior to this issue? I don't worship at the altar of The Distinguished Competition so I may have missed this fact in an annual or #0 issue but it seems like a pretty important piece of this story. I think Bruce whispering that he knows who the Joker really is would have had a greater impact had we not just discovered this in that same moment.
When it comes down to it Snyder and Capullo may go down in the history as the best Bat-team of all time. Death of the Family is just another jewel in the crown they are constructing.
Thor: God of Thunder #5
Gorr, The God Butcher tells his side of the story and explains his motivation to rid all dimensions of gods. Dude might have a point, these gods are dicks.
We follow Gorr through the centuries as he slays the first Elder Gods and constructs his master plan. We also watch as young Thor escapes Gorr's torture chamber while present day Thor travels 900 years in the future to come to the aid of...himself.
This is the best Marvel book out there. The hyper realistic art adds a theatrical element to the brilliant storytelling. I said it last month and I'll say it again I want the third Thor film to be Thor: The God Butcher. Comic fans I can't stress this enough, go out tonight and buy the first five issues of this arc. Then send me donations as a thank you. -Soss
