Thunderbolts #3
After a promising first two issues this book has stalled. The Thunderbolts have been stuck on an island for what seems like forever. General Ross has done something to a captured Leader that is making him stupid and nauseous. What kind of villain does nothing but puke all issue long?
Steve Dillion keeps cranking out solid panels with great physical humor. The scene with the baboon attacking the soldiers is classic Preacher stuff. Really loved that. I'm still not sold on the featured villain Mad Man. He seems a little cheesy, almost like he belongs in the New Gods universe.
Avengers #5
I really wish we would stop calling this book Avengers because it's not. It's Guardians of the Galaxy or FF or Fantastic Four or The Inhumans or Fun Time in Outer space. Any of those titles would be more appropriate then Avengers. Gint would love this book if he wasn't allergic to other comic publishers.
The story of the birth of the Sh'ar Empires newest Smasher is not awful. I actually kind of liked it. Anytime a farmer boy/girl gets to leave home and fight an evil empire in space I have to go along with it.
Adam Kubert lends his talents on pencils and inks in a guest spot. You would think this would be a good thing but his line work felt very rushed. He is still one of my favorite artists but portions of this book felt like it was 10 minutes til the end of the work day and Marvel wasn't paying overtime.
Hawkeye #7
I love that Clint Barton's neighbor, Grills, keeps referring to him as "Hawkguy". It has such an organic feel to it. It's like this doofus heard his name on the news and just assumed that there was a "guy" at the end. You know....cause he's a guy...right.
Hawkeye is a damn entertaining book on a lot of different levels. The art, while simple, always gets the job done. Matt Fraction shows up every month and delivers witty dialogue and clever situations to put Mr. Barton in. My favorite exchange is when Clint refers to Kate as his ward and Grills asks him what the hell that means. Seriously, no one should have a ward. I'm looking at you Bruce Wayne.
The over the top pro New Jersey nonsense in this book was a little too much for me but that's just nitpicking. Hawkeye continues to be one of Marvels best superhero books despite the fact that neither Kate nor Clint ever actually puts on a costume. -Soss
