Soss' 5-1-14 Pull-List Review

Skinned #1
One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a comic book fan is indulging in the impulse buy. Over the years I've found many great stories simply by taking a chance on a cover that looked intriguing on the shelf, or more recently while browsing through Comixology. The impulse buy was dealt a blow this week with the removal of in-app purchasing in the Comixology app. In the end it's not Marvel, DC or Image that will feel any adverse effects from this move. It will be the smaller companies that rely on customers taking a chance.

While these kinds of purchases don't always lead to your next favorite book, its always exciting to take a chance on something new. Monkey Brain's Skinned is a book with a promising premise that failed to deliver on my expectations.

In the near future all visual reality is control by cybernetic contact lenses. These lenses are surgically implanted at birth and permit the wearer to create whatever reality they choose. I've often thought about doing a story very similar to this so I was excited to see where this would go.

Maybe it's the fact that what I had in mind was much more perverse, but Skinned #1 came off as bland. With a plot device as strong and limitless as altering one's reality, it seemed as if the creative team was content in just drawing all the characters in different outfits.

I could be judging this too harshly since it was the pilot issue. The art is fantastic and I'm captivated by the idea of instantly shifting your reality so I plan on hanging with this one despite ultimately being disappointed. -Soss
