To Boldly Go
Years ago, during my formative comic-reading years, Soss and I would frequent a local comic shop whose employees eerily resembled the crew of the Next Generation Enterprise... except they were all pretentious douchebags. The only one that wasn't was the Lieutenant Commander Riker analog who was just creepy and perverted. That is a direct quote in the strip above. I'll never forget it for as long as I live.
Local comic book shops are a tough business. For the owners of said shops as well as the patrons. If you have one nearby whose employees don't look down their noses at you for not knowing the first appearance of Batroc the Impaler (or whatever the fuck that guy's name is) you're a step ahead of the game. Sometimes it takes a while for the employees to accept you, other times, they're just too fucking nerdy to be anything BUT exclusive.
Weekly, Soss and I spent tons of sweet green at the shop illustrated above but to no avail. We'd still get openly criticized by "Captain Jean Luc Picard" on the books we'd purchase. It was easily the most unique sales strategy I've ever seen. The guys clearly loathed human contact, but were forced to endure it day after day. Their own personal hell I imagine.
Bottom line, we got some funny stories out of it. You'll probably hear them sometime on one of the podcasts.
