Soss' Pull-List Reviews 4/18/13

Uncanny X-Men #4
What a cop-out! This issue is a repeat of issue #3 but told from the perspective of Emma Frost and the Stepford Sisters. While Wolverine and Cyclops yell at each other in the background we are treated to panels and panels of psychic thought balloons. Riveting stuff.

I tire of seeing my heroes bicker and fight with each other month after month. Uncanny might find itself on the Soss chomping block if Bendis can't get some true villains in the house.

Uncanny Avengers #6
This wasn't what I was expecting. Last issue ended with a dark glimpse of a future in which the Red Skull had triumphed over the Avengers. Number 6 takes place in Scandinavia 1013 A.D., a far cry from the Days of Future Past tale I was expecting. That said it was a pretty awesome read.

Apocalypse receives word from a mysterious pharaoh that the God of Thunder poses a threat to his plans of world domination. This all turns out to be an elaborate plot to have Thor bring a mystic weapon from Asgard to Earth. By the end of the book the reader learns who said pharaoh is and why he needs this magical ax.

Daniel Acuña is a suitable fill-in for this book. While his style is different from regular artist John Cassaday, it is very similar to Esad Rubic who currently is on Thor: God of Thunder. Since this book was all about the Odinson I was cool with it.
Thor: God of Thunder #7
Old King Thor and Present day Thor ready themselves for a final showdown with Gorr while in the past Young Thor brashly takes matters into his own hands and confronts the God Butcher alone. Young Thor is a straight up dumbass.

This book is fucking great. There is no other way to state it. Esad Rubic creates beautiful, vibrant pages. The tale takes place on many worlds at many different times and he perfectly captures the strangeness of each alien planet.

Jason Aaron has put his stamp on this character. Not only has he created an iconic villain in Gorr the God Butcher, he has written not one but three interesting and layered versions of Thor in the span of seven issues. Marvel NOW! has brought us some questionable content these past few months, but there is no question that this book is awesome. -Soss
