Swamp Thing gets cut from the Pull-List leaving just two books this week.
Second Place:
Animal Man #19
I was on the fence when it came to buying this issue. It was a game-time decision when I got to the shop. I'm glad I picked it up. It was a solid issue, even if it may have been Jeff Lemire's last.
He's leaving the book as writer sometime soon. I don't know when. Maybe next issue. I'll probably be leaving with him. Swamp Thing already fell by the wayside today with Scott Snyder, Yanic Paquette and Marco Rudy leaving that book.
This issue was pretty sad. And a pretty emotionally miserable ending to Lemire's run. Cliff Baker is dead, Ellen wants a divorce and the Red turns on Buddy and cut ties with him. It ends on a pretty serious downer. The bright side? Socks, the Red avatar is one of the best characters DC has going for it. That's saying a lot for Socks and not a lot for DC's current stable of characters.
Depending on the next creative team I may be back. If not, its been a hell of a run and I've really enjoyed Lemire, Steve Pugh and Travel Foreman's work these past 19 issues.
First Place:
Green Lantern #19
This is the second to last issue of Green Lantern. Well, not really. It'll keep going on even when Geoff Johns doesn't write it anymore, but my heart will no longer beat for it.
At some point, Johns' story has almost become about Sinestro as opposed to Hal Jordan. Don't get me wrong, this was a good issue, and no one will write Sinestro like Johns does, but a couple times in this issue it felt like Johns thought, "shit, I guess we better squeeze Hal in here."
The First Lantern is still incredibly dumb, and this is the first time he's appeared in the main title. Its the most entertaining version of him, but he's still dumb. If he controls the entire emotional spectrum, I don't understand how that translates to being able to make people think they're in a different timeline. Comic book science I guess,
The combo of art duties by Ardian Syaf and Szymon Kudranski is solid. I think its Syaf's work in the bulk of the book. He's a good Green Lantern artist. He should stay on it. I wish Doug Mahnke would have been able to finish out the run, but I guess you can't always get what you want.
At this time next month, Green Lantern will most certainly be finishing first on the Pull-List. Its Geoff Johns last issue after all. See you then.
Panel of the Week:
The amazing Gary Frank's gatefold cover over Sinestro doing what Sinestro does best.
