Soss' Pull-List Reviews 4/4/13

Uncanny Avengers #5
Wonder Man and The Wasp join the team and help to repair the damaged reputation of the X-Men members of the squad. I was surprised to see The Wasp was brought back from the dead. I know that no one stays dead in comics, but I'd at least like to be notified when folks are resurrected. It really framed how nerdy I am when I Google searched "Janet Van Dyne" and not "The Wasp" last night.

Oliver Coipel does his best John Cassday impression here. His pencils look so similar that you almost don't pick up that this is a totally different artist. I wish companies would make it more of a priority to find fill-in's with similar styles. It really takes you out of a book when the first half is Ed McGuinness and the second half is Alex Maleev. Just saying.

Thanos Rising #1
The origin story of the God of Titan. I never knew the origin of this iconic character so this was an interesting read for me. Simone Bianchi was a superb choice for the art on this book. I love this new breed of artist that pencils, inks and color's their own work. The results are often gorgeous. You can't do that on anything but a mini-series but I'll take it every time.

The most notable point to this book wasn't anything that actually happened in the pages. It was the marketing. A friend of mine who had been out of comics for over a decade saw an ad on Facebook and went to the shop with me yesterday. I heard a radio commercial for this book in the morning. That's right, radio commercial for a comic book. Marvel didn't mess around with the media push. I think it's a great sign to see comic advertising in places other  then comic books and comic shops. If you would like to hear more of our thoughts on the marketing of comic's check out the McSoss Comic Book Podcast available in the iTunes Store and at Podomatic.com.

Thunderbolts #7
The team plan's to overthrow General Ross after his handling of their first mission. It turns out that it isn't the smartest idea to take on the Red Hulk while traveling in a submarine.

This issue was filled with dialogue and character development which is right up my alley. We find out about Electra and Frank Castle's new relationship and Mark Way add's another layer of depth to the usually hatable Deadpool.

One of my newest favorite artist is featured on this book as the fill-in, Phil Noto. Mr. Noto seemingly has done it all in the 2 years I've followed him. He has been the colorist on several titles but his pencil work is where he shines the most. Best issue of this title thus far.-Soss
