Those Other Transforming Robots

I can't imagine Hollywood making a GoBots movie. Would I be the first in line to see it? Yes. But I can't imagine it actually getting done. Even the name GoBots sounds too lame to translate to a big screen franchise for 2015. But other than that, there aren't too many other hindrances.

"Its too much like Transformers" will be the first argument. Well, that didn't stop Pacific Rim from hijacking Voltron's game and that did pretty well. And this is the perfect opportunity to get right what Michael Bay got wrong with Transformers. True, GoBots doesn't have the recognizable names like Optimus Prime and Bumblebee... but lets be honest, they're barely recognizable in those movies anyhow. GoBots can get back to the roots of where the series came from and use the original designs as a base to start with so the characters look like the real characters, not just an eyesore of moving metal. Their physiologies can make sense. They can breathe real life back into these robots.

They can also lighten the tone. GoBots can be the Marvel to Transformers' DC. Give it a Guardians of the Galaxy-type fun, adventure feel and stay away from the grim and grittiness of something like Man of Steel. Removing the "we're too serious for our own good" aspect of making this franchise would act like a breath of fresh air post-Michael Bay. I think even Michael Bay Transformers fans are tired of Michael Bay Transformers.

Or, go animated. With Big Hero Six and The Lego Movie garnering just as much praise last year as some bigger hoity toity movies, get an animation studio involved. Kids and adults loved Big Hero Six and The Lego Movie equally. CG animation is a viable route to use.

GoBots will always be the runner up to Transformers. Its unfortunate because there's some legit gold to mine in that franchise. But it is there, Hollywood just needs the balls to look.
