Satellite Sam: Volume 1
Wasn't I just bitching about how Matt Fraction always lets me down? I'll hand it to him, he develops books that get my attention. He also covers a wide variety of subjects and themes giving me the feeling that he always has something fresh to offer.

Satellite Sam is a murder mystery set in the world of 1950's live broadcasting. When television star Carlyle White is found murdered it is up to his son to track down his killer. While at the crime scene, Michael White stumbles upon boxes and boxes of racy photographs taken by his father. This revelation sets him on a path to find out who his father really was.

The book is illustrated in black and white by Howard Chaykin in a vintage style that fits perfectly with the setting. I know some of you turn your noses up at black and white comics but trust me when I say that this book wouldn't have the same tone if it was in color.

Fraction delivers a pretty intriguing story. The smoke-filled, gritty world of the early fifties is a change of pace and Michael's mission to find his father's killer while battling crippling alcoholism is an interesting subplot.  My only real complaint is that the story gets bogged down by lengthy explanations of the rules and regulations of 1950's network television.

This first issue is 99 cents on Comixology, so if you are looking for an enjoyable story at a deep discount give Satellite Sam a read. -Soss
