A group of explorers from the 1920's discover a mysterious island that grants them super-powers. Blessed with these new gifts the newly minted super-beings guide America out of the Great Depression and become an integral part of the countries rise to it's current status. Fast forward to 2013 were the original heroes are still fighting the good fight while their spoiled and also gifted offspring party the night away.
Mark Millar and Frank Quitely team up for this take on bratty super teens. I bought this book without even knowing the plot because I'm such a fan of both creators, however I can say that this is not their best work. If the point was to make the reader absolutely hate the group of young teens then Millar hit the mark. I was actually thrilled when one of them overdosed and face planted into a glass table. Not a good sign when the reader is rooting for your main characters to bite it in the first 22 pages.
Millar also plays up the role that super-heroes could have in politics. Yuck. Leave that stuff for CNN please. The only time I want to be reading about presidential policy in a comic is when Lex Luthor is the president.
All-New X-Men #11
Finally! The face-off between Wolverine's X-Men and Cyclops' X-Men comes to an end! Some of you might not fully understand this but a conversation on the front lawn of the School for Gifted Mutants has taken 4 issues and crossed over between two books. I feel like I've been reading the same scene since before Christmas. In the end no one switched teams and everyone went home.
There is a lot for me to complain about with this book but I'll try to point out some of the bright spots. Stuart Immonen is back in the house and does a bang up job on pencils. There also is a sweet emotional moment where Kitty talks to Jean about the responsibility of being as powerful as she is.
In the end I'm really tired of the hero-on-hero stuff and judging by the cliffhanger of this book we are just getting started.
Guardians of the Galaxy #2
Damn it. I can feel it happening. I'm starting to get excited for the upcoming GotG movie and all because of this stupid, awesome book. The Guardian's stop a mini invasion of Earth with the aid of new member Tony Stark. We also get to sit in as different representatives throughout the cosmo's weight in on what should be done with this upstart planet Earth.
Not even Bendis can make me not hate Rocket Raccoon but the rest of the Guardian's are pretty dashing in this book. It wasn't all about kicking alien ass, these characters truly care for one another.
Steve McNiven and Sara Pichelli are a dream team. Their pencils are complementary and I can honestly say that I can't tell who did what on this book.
This Guardians of the Galaxy title has not only made me a believer in the upcoming film by a fan of this current team.
Panel of the Week:
This dude looks like he could destroy some shit.
