Gint's 5-1-13 Pull-List Review

A nice relaxing two-book week in the A department. Lets see how they play out...

Second Place:
Aquaman #19

Had to enjoy this issue before John Ostrander takes over the next two issues. John Ostrander seems to get a lot of hype around the comic community. I don't share it. I've never read anything by him I've particularly liked.

This issue however was pretty solid. Arthur continues his hunt for The Scavenger (who's scavenging discarded Atlantean weapons from the attack), Murk and Tula are trying to rescue Orm, and Mera has been captured by some frozen sea King. Oh and she's married... NOT to Arthur. Lots of plot points get some love this issue.

I've been poo pooing a lot of DC books lately. Since the New 52 began most of them have really either fallen flat or gone so far sideways they're unreadable (I'm looking at you Superman). But unlike a Johns' written book like Justice League which seems to be rudderless at times, Aquaman has been rock-solid for twenty straight issues.

First Place:
Animal Man #20

I love me some Jae Lee art, but his style really isn't conducive to super-heroing. The Dark Tower? Yes. Something like I, Vampire? Yes. Animal Man... its a good thing he only did the cover.

The interior of the book was pretty damn good. It tells you the story of the movie Buddy Baker made as an actor before all the Rotworld stuff broke out. It was almost groan-inducing when I realized what the story would be, but Jeff Lemire really hooks it up and pulls it all together with the last couple pages. I think it would be fair to say its one of my favorite Animal Man issues.

John Paul Leon draws a good, dirty issue, Alex Maleev-ish issue. I liked it. Fit the story really well. Timothy Green II picks up pencils on the last couple pages that feature Buddy Baker in the present. All around a good issue.

Panel of the Week:

Paul Pelletier on Aquaman really puts in the work hooking up this undersea graveyard spread.
