Gint's 1-2-13 Pull-List Review

Welcome to the first Pull-List Review of 2013. Three books provide a nice start to the new year.

Third Place:
I, Vampire #15

I was pretty excited about this issue. And then I was introduced to Andrea Sorrentino's fill-in/replacement Dennis Calero. I expected him to fill-in for an issue until I realized Sorrentino is also working on the revamped Green Arrow. Calero does an okay job, but he's no Sorrentino. There's a mood and a precision that Sorrentino is capable of that Calero needs to brush up on.

Fialkov's still doing a great job on the story, but missing Sorrentino bumps it back a step. Andrew and the bad guys go to Van Helsing castle for a book and Mary and the good guys go to England and find that somehow, Cain (the vampire that turned Andrew) is now also human.

So good luck to Dennis Calero. He's got some HUGE shoes to fill.

Second Place:
The Flash #15

The Flash is a pretty great book, but this month it fell the teensiest bit behind Justice League Dark finishing in the two-hole. (heh heh)

Marcus To, who's art I seriously love, handles the majority of the art this issue. Francis Manapul flexes his chops in some seriously inventive pages that look amazing, if a little hard to understand at times. He takes the idea of Barry's speed mind and runs it through nine pages. Its a hell of an undertaking and very interesting.

To has done a great job filling in for some issues, but I'm ready for Manapul to really take over art duties for the long run.

First Place:
Justice League Dark #15

Jeff Lemire's run is coming to a close as Ray Fawkes joins him as co-writer. Lemire has been doing such cool things with the book that its tough seeing him split duties. So far so good though. Part 1 of The Death of Magic is a good one full of surprises and interesting twists.

Tim Hunter and Zatanna get sent to a different dimesion. Something called the Wild Area where magic is incredibly more powerful that back home on Earth. Constantine and the crew go chasing after them and that's when the fun starts. This new world affects each member of the JLD differently.

Mikel Janin does his usual amazing job on art in a great start on the next arc of the book.
