We bid adieu to two books this week. One because it was a 6-issue mini-series and the other because its shit on a shingle.
Fourth Place:
Action Comics #15
In the immortal words of Freddy Mercury, another one bites the dust. Grant Morrison ran me off of Batman a few years ago with the whole Damian/Black Glove mess and now he's done it again, but this time to Action Comics.
Morrison has set up this whole next arc around Vyndktvx, a Fifth Dimensional imp who is the rival of Mxyzptlk. The whole story is told in four different times based on what Vyndktvx is capable of. Morrison's high-concept writing just makes my head hurt.
Maybe its because I think any stories involving Myxzptlk are stupid. If it were up to me, I'd remove him from comics all together. I'd purposely not write stories involving him and let his copyright run out so someone else could take it and get him the fuck out of my Superman books.
So once again, Grant Morrison is responisible for ruining what could have been a really good book. Once again, my Pull-List will be a little lighter because of the highly overrated Grant Morrison.
Thrid Place:
Animal Man #15
Our trek through the dystopian future of Rotworld continues as our heroes defeat Gorilla Grodd's army and find a hidden prisoner of the Rot.
Steve Pugh and Timothy Green II continue to make Animal Man a gory, gruesome book. I can honestly say this issue was the first time I've seen a head ripped off a gorilla. Reading this after reading the failure that was Action Comics this month was a breath of fresh air. Jeff Lemire writes a strong, enjoyable story. The pacing could be a little quicker. The last two issues seem to carry on a bit, but that's a minor complaint in the face of how cool this book has been.
Frankenstein also makes an appearance and I don't understand the attraction to this character. He had his own series when the New 52 kicked off and has been in two of my books the last couple weeks. It feels like the writers at DC really like him, so they just keep putting him in stuff hoping the general public will like him too. I don't get it. He's kind of boring.
Second Place:
Swamp Thing #15
Well that was a heck of a twist I didn't see coming. Alec makes it to Rotworld's Gotham for help and I guess he finds it. Its just not what you were expecting.
Scott Snyder has been proving over a year that he knows what's up. Between Batman and Swamp Thing he can write a killer book. I can't wait for his and Jim Lee's Superman next year.
Alec and Deadman fight off William Arcane in the ocean and Alec makes it into the city. Meanwhile, Abigail goes back home to Europe to directly stop Anton. She however runs into some problems in what seems to be the Parliament of Rot.
Marco Rudy's panels are a little tough to see this issue. I imagine its on purpose to showcase just how fucking crazy Rotworld is, but you can't always tell what's happeing. Aside from this Swamp Thing continues to be an enjoyable read.
First Place:
Voltron: Year One #6
Brandon Thomas is a great writer. At least based on what he's done for Dynamite's Voltron books, that's my opinion. Especially in Year One where he had the help of an excellent artist in Craig Cermak.
This issue wraps up the story of Space Explorer Squad #686's last mission before being sent to find the Voltron robot. There's a lot of political intrigue and a James Bond-ness quality about it that really puts the pilots first. It makes you care about these guys with or without a giant robot made of lions. I can only hope Thomas and Cermak have more in store. I can't tell you how badly I want to see their take on this team going to Arus to find the lions.
If there aren't plans on keeping this title going, I hope Dynamite has the sense to put Craig Cermak, an actual competent artist on the main book, whose art is an embarrassment to the business.
Voltron: Year One was a fantastic read and I can't recommend it highly enough.
Panel(s) of the Week:
You're not going to get a juicy Jim Lee-style splash page from Craig Cermak, but what you will get is a seriously well done book.
