Acceptance
I want everyone to love Superman as much as I do. Its as simple as that. Since I was a wee laddie I've loved Superman. The 1978 Christopher Reeve Superman movie was as big a part of my childhood as Star Wars and Transformers. Star Wars and Transformers have found new life. It may be a poorly done, ill conceived new life, but a new generation appreciates them just the same. Next year Superman will get his chance.
The Zack Snyder-directed, Christopher Nolan-produced Man of Steel trailer premiered last week. Watch it here. It looks incredible. The problem is I thought the same thing about Superman Returns when I first saw the trailer. Superman Returns turned out to be more mediocre than anything. When Richard White is your most compelling character, your movie is in trouble.
From the looks of the trailer we're going to get a Superman we haven't seen in theaters yet. A Superman that's finally able to cut loose and punch some fools. Christopher Reeve did that, but now we have the technology to make it look threatening.
So far the fan community is up in arms over Kevin Costner's Pa Kent being pretty non-chalant about allowing Clark to let his classmates die when he says, "maybe," to Clarks question of "was I supposed to let them die?" And that's the right answer. Sure, Pa Kent has always been portrayed as Clark's moral compass. But what do you think a smalltown farmer would say when faced with a son with superpowers placed in that situation? A situation that's just as alien to him as it is to Clark. He's not going to have the answer. And that right there, to me, speaks volumes as to where this movie is going. And it gives me hope that we're finally going to get a big screen Superman movie that not only makes a few bucks, but is able to resonate with people after they've left the theater.
So I say good luck to all involved. Superman is the most well known superhero in the world. And he's also the hardest superhero to get people to like. Trust me. I know.
Forever a Superman fan,
-Gint
