5-25-11 Yo, Holmes, to Bel-Air!

Judge Phillip Banks walked the fine line between tough-as-nails disciplinarian and cuddly teddy bear like few other fathers on TV. He set a high bar for any father to reach, though I imagine Mr. $oss acquitted himself quite well.

  1. Oh.... how perfect those TV Dads & Moms ! They always say and do the right things. Real Moms and Dads do their best but make many mistakes. It's a good thing that kids are tough. Great Dad's day comic tribute

  2. So SteveVCR, in the spirit of quality TV dads, who's YOUR favorite TV dad?

  3. Hummm....my favorite TV Dad. That's really a tough call. Hard to vote against Dr. Cliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby) cause he is a Doctor, rich, and has the answers. His kids always toe the line and he's funny. But he is too perfect.

Then on the opposite end of the spectrum..Homer Simpson. This dude is great! Homer drinks beer ,eats donuts and lets his kids do whatever they want to do. But does he seems to care about himself more then his kids or his blue haired wife, Marge?

I really like George's Dad from "Sienfeld". Frank Costanza has class and wears "The Bro". You also have an opportunity to air your grievances and wrestle him during the " Festivus" holiday . Too embarrassing!

I'm going way off the board with my favorite Dad pick it's, Walter White. Yeah, yeah...who the hell is he? He is the Dad from the series "Breaking Bad". He's a Chemistry teacher working to support his wife and disabled son while his salary forces him to moonlight washing his students cars after school. He finds out that he has cancer and suspects that he doesn't have long to live. He has a big mouthed brother in law who has plenty of money because he works for the DEA. Walt's brother in law is talks him into going on a raid of a Meth lab with the DEA. During the raid he discovers how much money Meth dealers can earn. He feels that to provide for his family after his death he must dive into the drug world. Being a chemistry teacher makes him a perfect person cook the best Meth. This guy loves his family and gets my vote. You know I could have voted for ...Tony Saprano.

  4. Looks like you gave this a lot of thought and covered the full spectrum of TV Dad's. I've never heard of this Walter White, but that show does look pretty good. Homer Simpson is an AWESOME TV Dad!

  5. Besides not being a Seinfeld fan, Jerry Stiller has class in every role he plays.

My favorite TV dad has to be Sandy Cohen from The OC. He's fair, tough when he has to be, will go to bat for his kids and is hilarious. He also has a strong moral code, unlike myself.

  6. I think my selection of Walter White was greatly influenced by the fact that I'm currently watching the third season of this great series "Breaking Bad". So since it's not quite Father's Day yet I hope it's ok to submit a more mainstream pick of Best TV Dad.
I did give this question some thought while drinking wine and surfing the net late at night. I never watched the OC but I saw that Sandy Cohen placed high in some Top Ten list of Dads as did Homer Simpson. I was very surprised that Fred Flintstone was not mentioned at all. You have to be a great Dad to drive your stone wheeled car to the drive-in using only your leg power .Only the Hulk has stronger legs.

So this intriguing question about my favorite TV Dad remained in my thoughts. My favorite TV Dad was on a show that aired on TV before dvr and even VCRs. If you wanted to see that weeks show you had to be sitting in front of the TV set or wait until next year. The actors in this series performed with no laugh track and the show was filmed in front of a live TV audience. This Dad was a simple man who worked hard everyday at a job with no fancy titles like lawyer or doctor. He managed to provide a home for his sweet wife and young daughter that he cared for more than anything. He didn't adjust well to changes in society and he didn't change much himself. This man was very basic and wore the same clothes everyday white shirt, black pants, white socks and black shoes. He had a gruff exterior however sometimes he gave you brief glimpses of his heart of gold. Although he referred to his wife as "dingbat" and pantomimed loading his revolver and blowing his head off when he felt she talked too much ,he loved her with all his heart. My favorite TV Dad was your local neighborhood bigot...Archie Bunker.
