What an underwhelming week in Marvel comics:
Astonishing X-Men #39
What a mess. If you were looking for the resolution to last month's cliffhanger you are out of luck my friend. Due to shipping delays it looks like Astonishing will have dueling storylines for the next few months. What a cleaver way to break momentum. Answering my question from last month "Where is the rest of the team?" we join Cyclops, Emma Frost, Wolverine & Armor fighting what appears to be Godzilla.
Nick Bradshaw is serviceable on pencils but i couldn't get past the fact that I was reading a replacement story. Is it too much to ask that Marvel gets its books out on time? I would rather see a fill-in artist finish the storyline then this switch-a-roo.
The New Avengers #13
With Mockingbird on her deathbed the team searches for the one item that could save her, the mysterious Infinity Sermon. Now I may not be all that familiar with this Dr. Deidre Wentworth, but she must be one tough bitch. It took TEN Avengers to take this one woman in a trench coat and high heels down. With the sermon in their possession, Nick Fury spends about five whole pages explaining what an awful idea it would be to attempt to save Mockingbird's life with this formula. What does that old man know? Let's just shoot her up and see what happens!
A decent outing for Bendis. I did enjoyed the banter between Spider-Man and Luke Cage a lot. For my money he writes the best Peter Parker in comics. Normally I like Mike Deodato's art but this issue was entirely too dark. Mikey, ease up on the shadows!
Panel of the Week: Every page was soaked in shadow like this one.
