Star Wars Rebels is somewhat of an anomaly in animated television in that they can kind of get away with straight up murder without the FCC busting any balls. Why? I assume because Stormtroopers look like robots.
The way our "heroes" wantonly kill 29 Stormtroopers in the first hour-long premiere was stunning. Our lead, Kanan, tosses a thermal detonator into the hands of two Stormtroopers and then laughs as they explode. Through the next three episodes, the killing is toned down a bit, but there are still instances of Stormtrooper murder.
I understand its "war," but the heroes don't even seem to try to not kill them. Our original trilogy heroes do the same in the movies, but the environment makes it understandable. The case for Rebels makes the heroes look too callous to really empathize with. You wind up almost pulling for the Stormtroopers.
Rebels is still walking a fine balance of being a show for kids, and a show for everyone. There's a sophistication in Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that Rebels should use as a guide for all ages Animation. ESPECIALLY if Rebels is meant to be canon.
