Soss' Suggestions 10-16-14

Wytches #1
Wytches is a tale about an ancient evil lurking in the woods and the awful sacrifices people make to get the things they desire. Leave your pointy hats, brooms and preconceived notions of standard witches at the door. Writer Scott Snyder and illustrator Jock have a different and more interesting take on the subject.

The Rooks family moves to a new town looking for a fresh start after the daughter Sailor is involved in a mysterious bullying incident that ended tragically. Throughout the book we get glimpses of the evil that haunts the family if not a full understanding of what it is.

Snyder plays this issue out like the first 20 minutes of a horror film. You get hints as to what the monster could be but as a reader you aren't totally sure who or what is following the family.

My favorite part of this book is the epilouge "Who Would You Pledge" where Snyder talks about what inspired him. Seeing photos of the forest that planted the seeds for this creepy tale gave the book another dimension in my eyes.

The book is filled with wonderful dialogue, likeable characters and some nasty and disturbing imagery. Perfect for Halloween! - Soss

Panel of The Week: After this weeks Ghostbusters conversation I think I'd have to pledge Paul McGinty.
