Dead Boy Detectives #1
Dead Boy Detectives offers the continued adventures of Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland, two schoolboy specter….you guessed it….detectives. This property apparently is a spin-off from Neil Gaiman's run on Sandman which I did not know until after reading the first issue. Maybe that’s why I felt so lost.
The book gets off and running with little back story. Edwin and Charles save a little girl named Crystal during an attempted art heist. While in a coma Crystal sees the Dead Boys and decides that she should enroll in the St. Hilarion's School, the same school where the title characters were killed by bullies.
I didn’t find myself caring too much about any of the characters. Maybe it’s because I have never read the Sandman issues they star in. Regardless, the first issue of any series is there to excite you about what could happen to these characters. I didn’t get any of that. I put this book down twice due to boredom. Unless you are already a fan of Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland avoid Dead Boy Detectives. -Soss
