Jem is the rare 80’s property targeting girls that still
resonates with those who grew up with it. While I still hear grown women speak fondly
about Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Short Cake and Barbie it’s not quite the same
as when they discuss Jerrica Benton’s alter ego.
Is it the MTV sensibility of the cartoon? Is it the secret identity
that framed Jem as a rock and roll super heroine? Is it the cheesy but catchy music? I hear it was contagious.
Next year Jem and the Holograms will join other 1980’s properties
like G.I. Joe and Transformers on the silver screen. Will the same women who
grew up dreaming that Synergy would transform them into glamorous rock stars make their
way to the theater to support this brand? If I was a gambling man I’d
say yes…but I don’t bet on movies. -Soss
