Fighting Weight

So Disney has bought Lucasfilm and all their properties, including Star Wars, and announced we'll see Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015. I guess part of me is surprised I'm going to get to see a 7, 8 and 9 in my lifetime. What's even more surprising is the groundswell of support that Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford are getting to reprise their roles of Luke, Leia and Han.

Granted, there's a certain amount of nostalgia that tugs at the heartstrings to actually see these three back together again. But is that really whats best for them or the franchise? They'll hold cherished spots in my heart until the day I die, but they're really fucking old now. And mostly fat. While I feel the lack of great effects in 1983 robbed me of seeing a truly powerful Luke Skywalker, I think the present day Mark Hamill would provide the same thievery. The effects are there now, but Hamill isn't anymore. Same goes for Fisher and Ford. Those days are just gone and thats okay.

As a hardcore Original Trilogy (OT!) fan, and avid prequel hater I kind of surprise myself when I say I'm alright starting the new trilogy after Luke, Han and Leia have passed away. Or better yet, just recast them a little bit older. Can you imagine how badass Ryan Gosling would be as a fully trained and powerful Luke Skywalker? Or seeing Nathan Fillion bring the Han Solo swagger back, since he essentially played Han Solo in Firefly?

There are options out there. Its not the popular opinion, but its okay to move the franchise forward without anchoring it to the past.
