Soss' Pull-List Reviews 10/4/12

AVX#12
I'll be brief. I hated this series. I hated the heroes vs heroes angle. I hated that they killed Professor X and I especially hated that they have turned Scott Summers into Hannibal Lecter. And what the hell was Iron Man doing on the cover! He had nothing to do with anything that happened in this book.

When did Scott get so crazy? I know the seeds of this were in last years Schism but it made some sense there. The dude is still broken up over Jean Grey and Wolverine is an instigator. For him to go full on bad guy is just silly.

At least the book looked nice. Andy Kubert did a great job as always. The battle sequences looked great. In the end it was just a big hollow ending for me.

Next month is Marvel Now! and I'm waiting to see what they do in response to DC's excellent New 52. I have my fingers crossed and I'm hoping it will be great, but this story has my confidence shaken.

The Boys # 71
The penultimate issue of the series was better then it's been in quite a few months. Hughie and Butcher are both morality wounded and talk about where everything went wrong. It seems that Butcher has a death wish that only can be fulfilled by Hugh and he proceeds to provoke him until he pushes him over the edge.

My biggest problem with this book is that over the course of this tale Garth Ennis transformed Butcher from a likable dick into a despicable villain. I can't help but draw the parallel between The Boys and Preacher. Cassidy had a great character arc and in the end was one of the most relatable characters in all of comics. He was an asshole but felt bad about it and ultimately made amends for his actions. Butcher is just a psychopath. I really wish there was more to him but there simply isn't and for that I'm awfully disappointed.

Next month will be the grand finale for a series that I've loved and hated since 2006. Lets hope we can end this thing right.

Before Watchmen: Rorschach #2
A diner waitress comes to the aid of a badly beaten Rorschach. After recovering for three days in the grossest hospital ever displayed on printed page the one man war on crime continues.

This is book is a great piece of work for numerous reasons. Lee Bermejo's painted pages are hyper realistic and beautiful. The filth, blood and decay of this world comes alive through his work. Azzarello nails Rorschach personality and speech. There was one line in particular that cracked me up. During an interrogation involving shards of glass to the mouth a street punk is asked where his boss Rawhead is hiding. The punk replies “Go to hell”. Rorschach responds “ I plan to...once you give me the directions”. I can almost hear Jackie Earle Haley saying that line.

Animal Man #13
Buddy Baker is catapulted into the future and things look rotten. Apparently it was a bad idea to leave Maxine alone while he and Swamp Thing tracked down the Rot. Upon his arrival to the future he is attacked by a decaying and possessed Hawkman. Luckily Steel, Black Orchid and Beast Boy are there to save his biscuits. There is a gruesome splash page that highlights the heroes battle with the Rot and how they failed.

I HATE that DC uses multiple inkers on the majority of it's books. Maybe it's just me and maybe I'm nitpicking but it's distracting as hell. At least they kept Timothy Green II on Rot World duty and let Joseph Silver to handle the present.

This story keeps getting better with each installment. Can't wait to get my hands on the next part in the pages of Swamp Thing. -Soss

Panel of the Week: Steve Pugh brings us the war against the Rot in all it's gory glory.
