Soss Pull-List Reviews 10/18/12

Wonder Woman #13
This was a very uneven issue. Tony Akins guest pencils this issue. Strangely his work got better as the story progressed. Maybe it's the combo inks of Dan Green and Akins that give this book two different looks.

Overall Wonder Woman has lost a considerable amount of luster since its debut. While I'm still enjoying the new world that Azzarello and Chang have created this book has leveled out over the past few months.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #3
This was the most enjoyable issue of the series to date. I guess it was a smart idea to replace James Robinson with Keith Giffen after all.

Prince Adam and Teela's travels find them sailing across the sea. Naturally Mer-Man shows up determined to follow Skeletor's orders to "Kill the Prince". You would think a dude that wears that much purple would LOVE Prince.

I dug the dialogue in this book. Teela and Adam's back and forth banter was funny as hell. You can see a true friendship growing between them. Great character work by Giffen. This also was the most consistent artistic effort from Phillp Tan. And to think I almost dropped this title after two issues.

Uncanny Avengers #1
The newest chapter of the Marvel Universe starts here. Cyclops is locked up for his crimes against humanity. The X-Men and Avengers are both fractured after the events of AVX. New mutants are being born everyday as humanity readies itself for possible war. Captain America and Wolverine have a big mess on their hands.

Before I start this review I have to reiterate that I HATE what has happened to Scott Summers. He deserves much better then to be written as a deranged lunatic. While I disagree with the route Marvel took to get here I do approve of a lot of the steps they are taking with this book. Rick Remender and John Cassaday are top level talents and are  clearly up to the task of guiding Marvel's new flagship book. The team that is assembled is a good mix of household names and background characters. Remender plays up the tension between this patchwork team who just last month were fighting to the death. There is some great dialogue between Rouge and Scarlet Witch. Some pretty hurtful words get tossed around.

I wasn't sure what to expect from John Cassady. He was the penciler on the best X-Men arc in recent memory but I haven't seen him work on a book constantly for years. I'm happy to report that his work is still on a high level. His characters have a real beauty about them. A good start for Marvel NOW!

Hawkeye #3
What a pleasant surprise! Now that I'm comfortable with the fact that Matt Fraction's Hawkeye always fights crime in his tee-shirt I'm completely on board.

Clint Barton meets a mysterious woman on his way to the store to pick up some tape. He then reviews his top nine terrible ideas of the day in some creative flashback scenes. Hawkeye feels like the crisp and clean cousin of Bendis and Maleev's run on Daredevil. Street level heroes at their best.

Panel of the Week: Silliness. I love it!
