I finally got around to seeing The Martian. The trailers looked good, Matt Damon is mighty charming and Jessica Chastain and Kate Mara are exceptionally pretty. How could I not see it? And the first thing I thought when Matt Damon's Mark Watney explains his predicament was, "dude, just kill yourself." That speaks a lot about why I'm not a scientist or an astronaut.
It was also the first movie I've seen in 3D that didn't leave my normally perfect eyes irritated after a couple hours. Trying to watch the action scenes from Clash of the Titans or The Avengers in 3D was a lesson in trying to fight off a seizure. But the slow moving pans of still landscapes, and even something simple like Mark Watney's video diary looked amazing at no cost to my vision.
Ex Machina and Interstellar are still on my sci-fi watch list, and I'll get to those someday, but neither of those looked as fun as The Martian. As it stands, I'm more of an action/adventure guy than a straight-up thought provoking sci-fi guy. I'll leave that to super dorks like Ian. Zing!
