Descender #1
In the distant future the Core Planets have been attacked by a race of gigantic sentient robots. Think of it as Marvel’s Celestials versus the Federation from Star Trek. Ten years after first contact with these machines, the intergalactic war rages on. A team of scientists have discovered a possible weakness in the machines. They quickly enlist the aid of disgraced robotics scientist Dr. Quon. Apparently one of Quon’s inventions, a one-of-a-kind robot boy, has been found on a distant moon and contains the codex needed to save humanity.
Jeff Lemire is well versed in science fiction. His Eisner Award nominated work on DC’s Trillium was one of my favorites of the past year. I’m a little disappointed that he chose to skip over all the fun space battle excitement and jumped right to this personal story about a lost robot boy. That said I have faith that I’ll still be entertained.
Dustin Nguyen does some nice watercolor work here. I usually need some inks with my comic art but Nguyen’s style is a good fit for this sci-fi tale.
This first book started slow but shows promise and features creative talent that will have me coming back for more. -Soss
