The Clothes That Make The Man-Cat

I love He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Unabashedly. My brother, nine years my junior, thinks its gayer than two guys stuffing each other on a rainbow that plays the Barry Manilow catalog. The 80s cartoon is admittedly hard to watch thirty-two (holy fuck!) years later. But that's less for the gayness and more for the fact that its just doesn't hold up. Unlike Transformers, He-Man's transparency for being a show for kids to sell toys is blatant.

A lot of my remaining love stems from sentimentality, sure. But it also comes from the fact that the world of He-Man is hands down one of the most imaginative properties created in the last 50 years. The way the world seamlessly blends fantasy, sci-fi, magic and technology offers a little something for everyone. Few things can't find a home on Eternia. If you can get past the stigma of how corny the old show was and choose to look past that at the possibilities this brand offers, its really something spectacular.

Other properties from the 80s cartoon boom were quite successful – Transformers and G.I. Joe topping that particular pyramid. Other shows like Thundercats and Voltron get a hell of a push. But there's a reason He-Man has consistently had a comic or cartoon with some publisher and is constantly in the movie rumor mill.

With the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies, and Game of Thrones being massively successful, now is the time to strike to make the next evolution in Masters of the Universe's continued success.

This is a great property that needs a great modern treatment. The foundation is there, it just needs a 2015 facelift.
