Last week Frank Cho received some flack for his take on Milo Manara's Spider-Woman variant cover. To demonize something that was clearly satire proves that there are certain fans and websites that are actively just trying to be offended by everything and anything.
If you are unfamiliar with with the cover in question or this story, I have provided a link below. Maybe Paul, Matt and myself are totally off base and what Frank Cho drew was totally reprehensible. What people need to realize is that first of all, the Gwen image is just a sketch, not an honest to gods variant print. Honestly, if people are looking at the Spider Gwen sketch and thinking “oh gods, yet another character getting over-sexualized”, they're looking at it incorrectly. There’s so much more going on in the Gwen image than that.
ReplyDeleteAlso, The Mary Sue is not exactly the best source when it comes to news. For example, if someone leaves a comment that disagrees with their views and provides pretty good evidence to back up a claim, they break out the ban hammer. Anything that they post should be taken with a grain of salt...hell, maybe the entire salt-shaker.
I think it was more meant to be a political cartoon of sorts and a jab towards Manara. I know Frank Cho said it was a “nod” to Manara, but that’s fancy speak for subtle bashing. Just look at Spidey's addition in this whole thing. I think even he represents the whole controversy rearing it's ugly, teenage-minded head. I also see the sketch more as "hey, stupids! This is how it's actually drawn," because quite Frankly (pun intended), Gwen does not look like a mutated lizard monster.
When I first saw the Spider-Gwen image on Frank Cho's website I thought " Thank goodness this is only a sketch. There's no way anyone can get upset about this. It will fly right under the radar." Wrong. Two days later people were losing their minds.
ReplyDeleteThe Mary Sue has a right to their opinions despite being ridiculous most days. That said Frank Cho has a right to create his art and Erik Larsen has a right to tweet that he thinks today's female heroes have bulky and unattractive costumes.
You are correct, the addition of Spider-Man is like a flashing light proclaiming " THIS IS A JOKE". Some people are just way more concerned with being offended. -Ian
