These are the things you never thought about as a kid. When you were young, Keith and Co. hopping into those robot lions and forming Voltron was enough. The logistics of what was actually going on wasn't important. For instance, how each lion is probably equipped with a bathroom.
Keith, Sven, Lance, Pidge, Hunk and eventually Princess Allura were Space Explorers. They explored space. Most of the time they were cozy at home in the Castle of Lions, but when long trips were involved, those lions had to have amenities. Sleeping quarters, bathrooms, maybe even a kitchenette? And when they formed Voltron, could you travel from lion to lion? Did the Black Lion have a common area since it was larger? All the more reason to finally make a live action Voltron so we can get these questions answered.
In the meantime, I recommend Brandon Thomas' Voltron run from Dynamite. He did a run on the main book and he also wrote a Voltron: Year One which is tremendously good. Excellent art in Year One too. The biggest problem with the main book was he never got a good artist to really bring the story home. Thomas' vision for the Voltron team (which takes place years after the show ends) was brilliant. You can appreciate the thought he put into crafting each story. He doesn't however answer the bathroom issue.
I guess no book is perfect.
