The Strain #1
The Strain is based on the vampiric novel series co-written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. This adaptation is from 2011 which was a few years prior to the FX television series. I have yet to watch the show so I’m not sure how close the comics are to that version of Del Toro’s world.
The book opens in Romania, circa 1927, as a grandmother tells young Abraham a haunting tale of nobleman Jusef Sardu and his terrible curse. Fast forward to the modern day where a Boeing 747 is reported to be parked on the tarmac and full of inexplicably dead people. The hook here is to see how these two stories will intertwine when a strange coffin is discovered stashed with the rest of the luggage.
With it’s connections to Del Toro and Dark Horse Comics, this book feels like a cousin of the Hellboy universe. If you enjoy supernatural adventuring The Strain probably is right up your alley. -Soss
