Gint's 5-29-13 Pull-List Review

A DC, Marvel and Vertigo book. We're all over the map this week, folks!

Third Place:
Justice League of America #4

Well, this issue had tons of buzz surrounding it before I even bought it. The first thing I heard from Chip at the comic shop was, "Read JLA first!" Allow me now to tell you what follows will be filled with SPOILERS.

Normally when a character gets killed, especially a main character, there's buzz outside the comic book universe. USA Today or some other periodical will pick up the news and spoil it. Well, since there was NOTHING in any news source until the comic came out, that tells me this isn't a lasting thing. Its a minor story beat that will be resolved in a couple issues.

On the second to last page, Catwoman, Selina Kyle (presumably) gets shot in the head and the last page shows her CLEARLY dead. Now, I believe, if this was a serious death like Damian Wayne recently, DC would have leaked it and we'd have seen this coming (gotta create buzz to sell the issue afterall).

There's tons of speculation as to how Catwoman will be brought back to life and more than likely she will. But how fucking crazy would it be if she didn't?! THAT'S what DC needs to do. Sack up and just kill a major character.

How was the issue? Good. Maybe the best one yet. And that's funny because Brett Booth draws it and I don't have a particular affinity for his work. My biggest problem with Booth faces is that they always look like they have a dip in. But damn did he draw some nice page layouts this issue.

Oh, and the Martian Manhunter backup story is dogshit. Pretty much everything they've done with J'onn J'onzz in the New 52 is dogshit. At least they're consistent.

Second Place:
X-Men #1

Wow. I never thought I'd be writing that title in this post.

Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel writing a team of all-female X-Men intrigued me enough to pick up #1. It was pretty good. I'm not a big fan of the X-Men, but I'm a big fan of Coipel. He can draw some shit. And he does in this issue.

He draws pretty girls. An imperative for a book led by all girls. He also draws pretty much everything really well. Brian Wood is 50/50 right now. I hated DMZ, but I dig Star Wars. He's got me with at least this issue.

Soss' favorite Jubilee shows up with a mysterious baby, and an old X-villain (I guess) shows up to stop it because that's his evil twin sister. Interesting enough to bring me back for issue #2 in a month.

First Place:
The Wake #1

Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy's tale of supernatural-ness under the deep sea has reeled me in immediately. No pun intended.

Dr. Lee Archer gets visited by the Department of Homeland Security to come and research an ominous sound recorded on accident from miles below the surface of the ocean in Alaska. Turns out there's a lot more for this recruited team to research than just some whale noises.

Scott Snyder's story and dialog flows smoothly giving each character a full personality in one issue. There's no doubt you know who these characters are after reading. Sean Murphy's art reminds me of Dustin Nguyen, if a little sketchier. That's a good thing. I love Nguyen's work and wish he was on a real book, not just Lil Gotham. But whatevs.

Scott Snyder has been on a roll lately. Eventually I'll pick up American Vampire. Snyder and Murphy are off to a nice start with The Wake.

Panel of the Week:

I'm a sucker for hot, evil chicks. Olivier Coipel can draw hot, evil chicks.
