The blatant comedy in Marvel's new Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon is akin to getting a cream pie in the face. Its over the top. I expect to see Iron Fist slip on a banana peel next episode. The bottom line is that its not the "animated series" we were hoping for. Spectacular Spider-Man blows this cartoon out of the water. But that was cancelled. Marvel may own the movie landscape but DC runs the show when it comes to animated fare.

I had no interest in the new Spidey cartoon. I am really digging the Avengers cartoon, but Spiderman looked like crap from the beginning (glad to see my instincts were right). Young Justice is the best cartoon out there right now!
ReplyDeleteSpectacular Spider-Man was so good, that's the quality I was expecting. Marvel can't seem to get their animated line together. Its really DC's strong suit though. Young Justice is phenomenal and Green Lantern just keeps getting better.

First, I find Ultimate Spidey pretty enjoyable. I definitely like it more than Green Lantern. Second, it's not for us anyway. This is Marvel's attempt to reach the 5-12 year olds out there. Their marching orders were to introduce that demo to the characters and get them hooked, specifically boys. Disney has the little girl demo all wrapped up with princesses and fairies and what-not, they acquired Marvel to finally lock down the boy demo as well. And Ultimate Spidey is supposed to lay the ground-work for that. My kids, for example, love it, and they're not even boys.
ReplyDeleteKumpf, how much is Marvel paying you to tow that line? I get that they're trying to hit a different demographic than 30-something fanboys, but they can make an intelligent show that reaches both audiences. Spectacular Spider-Man and Ben 10 did a great job of that. Ultimate isn't an abomination, its just not what I was expecting.
