$oss Pull-List Reviews 5/2/12

Avengers #25
Legendary penciler Walter Simonson lends his talents to this issue. He maybe a legend but his work here is far from that. Much like George Perez Simonson's art is trapped in the 1980's. I also blame colorist Jason Keith for his bland, flat color work.

Nothing new is reveled here. Cap wrestles with some guilt over having to go to Utopia to extract Hope. This was pretty much a throw away issue.

New Avengers #24
Yet another tie-in to AVX. This book is a behind the scenes look at Luke Cage and his wife's feelings on the pending civil war between Avengers and X-Men.

Mike Deodato does a fine job on pencils. He has a tendency to get crazy with his shading but keeps it under control here.

Justice League Dark #8
I can't wait for this crossover to be finished. I wish they would have allowed readers to get a firm grasp on the JLD before mixing things up like this.

Daniel Sempere fills in nicely on this book. I just wish there was a better story to go along with his fine art.

Justice League International #8
Batwing joins the JLI, do we REALLY need more Bat-people? Dan Jurgens provides a slightly cheesy story. It wasn't awful, but every time I read Jurgens work I can't help but feel like I went back in time to '92.

Aaron Lopresti's art impressed me. This is the first time I've heard of this artist and I was really into his work. Great character designs and nice expressions.

Moon Knight #12
My favorite Marvel book of the past year went out with a fizzle instead of a bang. It was cool to see Marc Spector go toe to toe with the powerful Count Nefaria. The Avengers make a cameo, which I guess will be happening in every Marvel book this month.

I truly loved these twelve issues and I hope that it doesn't take Marvel to long to green-light more of Mr. Spector's adventures.

Uncanny X-Men #11
This was the best AVX tie-in so far. The book is almost entirely captions but it works. Some introspection is a welcome change from the endless smashing that's gone on so far. We get a glimpse into Prince Namor's head who admirers Cyclops commitment to his people but at the same time is daydreaming about stealing Emma Frost away from him. Kieron Gillen writes him as a supreme dickhead and I love it!

Greg Land throws down some impressive pencils. My only real complaint is with his depiction of Hope Summers. Isn't she supposed to be sixteen? Why does she look like she is a thirty year old supermodel? The answer is because he traced Gisele Bundchen. Get this man a copy of Teen People!-$
