Two books this week and neither of them blew me away.
Second Place:
Descender #10
Andy and his crew of prisoners make it to the planet Sampson to get info on how to find Tim-21. That allows us to meet The Between: the cyborgs of the Descender universe. I guess Andy used to date their leader. It makes me realize if I was a comic book artist I'd have a hard time drawing ugly girls. The creeper in my brain would want them all to be pretty.
Meanwhile, back at the UGC, a group of telepathic aliens tells the UGC leaders that its Tim-21 that will bring the Harvesters back to finish destroying what's left of the universe. Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen have done a great job setting up different pieces on the board and turning them all toward wanting to find Tim.
Overall this is a cool book, and continues to be so, but there's just something I can't put my finger on that it's been missing from being a GREAT book.
First Place:
Darth Vader #16
So, I'm not really sure what happened between Aphra and Vader in Vader Down. She risked her life to save him, but got caught by the Rebellion. But Vader still doesn't care if a horde of bounty hunters brings her in dead or alive. Maybe this is just Kieron Gillen's way of showing how ruthless old school Vader is. OR, Vader's scheming again.
Salvador Larroca's art is strong. I've been reading the majority of my Marvel books digitally lately since they come with that free digital code. Its been neat. It allowed me to really inspect Larroca's line usage and get an idea of how he does shading and texture. Super inside baseball stuff, I know.
Just like Descender above, Darth Vader isn't knocking my socks off. Its a strong, enjoyable book that's missing some unknown intangible that's preventing it from being a great book.
Page of the Week:
The pages leading up to this one make it a really powerful statement page. I'd be lying if my focus didn't land on Larroca's great work on Aphra's buttcheeks.
