$oss' Pull-List Reviews 11-16-11

Moon Knight #7

The Kingpin of the West Coast is reveled in this issue. I'm a long time Marvel reader and even I don't know who Count Nefaria is. I guess C-list villains for C-list heroes. It's a shame, I was hoping for a more well known villain.

Alex Maleev continues to produce high level, gritty artwork. He delivers an amazingly realistic book each month that truly fits the superhero crime-noir style. From what I've read about Maleev's artistic process, he uses photo reference for every panel. I can't imagine how much he has to pay out in modeling fees. Another solid outing for one of the best Marvel books on the racks.

The Boys #60
Garth Ennis served up a pretty silly one this month. The Seven have been planning for months on a way to remove the President from office and install Vick the VP in his place. But all their planning turns out to be unnecessary when The Children's Association of Special Pets visits The White House. Their dirty work is handled for them when pet wolverine gets loose and rips The President to shreds. This panel along with the subtle hint on the cover to a certain fast healing Canuck really made me laugh.

The final splash page was also pretty hilarious. "Stop standing there like fucking lunatics and come and sit down, you're going to give me a migraine," was the line of the week.

The Avenging Spider-Man #1
Is it necessary to have another Spider-Man title on the shelves? When it's as good as this book the answer is an emphatic yes. Zeb Wells and Joe Madureira's newest spin on The Web Slinger is the best rendition of this character in years. This book avoids all the dumb crap that has made Spider-Man unreadable since J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr. left. No homage to the boring stories of the 80's, no deals with the devil, no Spider Island and thank God no Anti-Venom.

Avenging focuses on Spidey and his involvement with The Avengers. The first issue addresses how he has time to be an active member in two separate Avengers teams as well as how his teammates feel about him. In short he annoys the shit out of them. The book opens with a two page splash of the team taking on a larger then life villain, too large for Peter Parker to be of any use. Spidey patiently stands aside as the heavy hitters like Thor, Iron Man and The Hulk handle the problem. Afterwards when he asks for a lift home each member of the team turns down his request stating that he is a pain in the ass. I love this kind of stuff.

Joe Madureia shines in his return to Marvel. His characters all look great and his panel design is excellent. It's weird since I'm usually not a fan of comic art that doesn't feature traditional inks but this style really works for this book. At long last there is a Spider-Man book that I can get behind.-$

Panel of the Week: Spider-Man taking it easy.
