I've always been under the impression that Sven got a raw deal. Keith, Lance and himself were similar enough that one of them, unfortunately, became expendable. And someone on-high probably said, "you know, if we had a girl on the team, more girls would watch this show!" So that was it. The straws were drawn and boom. Sven's outie 5000.
I will give the writers credit for trying to give him a continuing story worthy of the Voltron second-in-command instead of killing him off. But lets face it, if you're not piloting a lion, you ain't shit.
