Gint's Pull-List Review 1-26-11

Another light week for the ol’ Pull-List. Three books this week: Action Comics #897, Green Arrow #8 and Wonder Woman #606.

While last week’s comics were harder to rate due to a high quality of each, the week of January 26 presents us with a lesson in mediocrity.

Our winner this week…

Green Arrow #8

… barely.

I’ve enjoyed Green Arrow so far. J.T. Krul has been doing a good job with the writing and Diogenes Neves’ art has been passable. This issue however was just kind of boring.

Instead of furthering the plot (which I’m sure it did in some small way) it just tells a story about goings on in the Star City forest. It was a cool story, but nothing awe inspiring.

And I hate reading Etrigan and that damn rhyming speech.

Our runner up…

Action Comics #897

This has been a strange arc. I’m really on the fence about Paul Cornell. Sometimes I think he gets Lex Luthor, and other times I wonder if he’s forgotten who he’s writing.

I thought the search for the Black Rings had a lot of potential, but this arc just isn’t living up to it. At times it just feels like, “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if Lex faced off against Gorilla Grodd this issue? Lets do it!” It doesn’t feel like there’s a real cohesive story happening here. This latest installment is no different.

And easily finishing in last place…

Wonder Woman #606

Its just impossible for me to get into the new direction of Wonder Woman without bias. I’m really trying, but its not working out.

This story might be cool if it was introducing a brand new character or if it was clearly an Elseworlds tale. But its not. Its in-continuity Wonder Woman and I can’t justify it. The whole time I’m reading it I can’t help but think, “It’ll be over soon and we’ll get back to real Wonder Woman stories.”

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it happens sooner rather than later.

Ps: I don’t care if the new outfit is similar to the old one. And while I don’t want to be one of “those” fans, I want the traditional outfit back. I know a warrior princess wouldn’t really run around in a glorified bathing suit. But its fucking comic books for Christ’s sake. Give her the iconic one.
