"Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks?" Isaac Hayes does a better job summing up Shaft then I ever could. Unfortunately fans of the 1970's blaxploitation film will have to wait until next issue for the traditional version. This first issue is your standard origin story dealing more with John Shaft working at Gimbels than seducing foxy ladies. Bummer.
While the plot is pretty straight forward there is still a lot to enjoy here. The inking and coloring styles reflect the techniques of classic 70's comics. Penciler Bilquis Evely has a nice traditional style the fits the books retro feel.
While the story is familiar to anyone who has read the Punisher there is enough substance here to have readers coming back next issue. -Soss
