1-26-10 A Good Cry

In January of 2000 Mr. McGinty and myself began to have classes together as Graphic Design students at Pittsburgh Technical Institute. Beside the awful girl problems we had in common we also shared a love of pop culture and 80's cartoons. One of the moments that solidified our friendship, I believe, was the process of revisiting “Transformers: The Movie”.

Of course we both remembered that a few bad things happened in this feature film, supposedly created for the viewing of small children. Surely we both exaggerated the devastating effects this flick had on our childhood, right? Nope. Within the first 15 minutes of the movie all of the characters we all knew and loved had been brutally murdered before our eyes and replaced with posers like Wheelie and Galvatron. I'll never forget the moment “shit got real” for me when I watched the red mist seep out of Prowl's dead eye sockets as Megatron gunned him down in cold blood. But now that I think about it, that kind of tough love in my cartoons got me ready for the harsh reality of the real world. The generation of today will have a REALLY bad time dealing with the realities of job loss, failed relationships, and AFC Championship game loses. I guess we were lucky.
